Viacha military base explosions leave three dead and 14 missing
Two powerful explosions occurred at the RAM-2 ‘Bolívar’ Mechanized Artillery Regiment maintenance center in Viacha, Bolivia, near La Paz. The first detonation reportedly involved black powder from stored pyrotechnic material, followed by a second explosion of much greater magnitude.
The incident has resulted in at least three confirmed deaths, including the discovery of an unidentified male body in the rubble. Authorities are searching for 14 military personnel, including one sergeant and 13 conscripts, who remain missing. The number of injured has been reported between 58 and 84 people, including military members, police, and civilians, with several in serious condition.
The explosions caused significant structural damage to the military facility and nearby residential homes, with many neighbors reporting broken windows and cracked walls. A crisis committee comprising the Armed Forces, Police, Civil Defense, and the Ministry of Health has been activated to coordinate emergency responses. President Rodrigo Paz has ordered a thorough, technical, and transparent investigation to determine the exact causes and establish responsibilities. The area remains under military guard as specialized teams work to remove debris and secure remaining munitions.
