Viana do Castelo hosts permanent Eixo Atlântico painting exhibition
Viana do Castelo has inaugurated a permanent exhibition at the Antigos Paços do Concelho, bringing together award-winning works from various editions of the Eixo Atlântico Painting Biennial. For the first time in the program's nearly 30-year history, 31 winning pieces are being displayed in a single location, showcasing the evolution of contemporary painting across the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion.
The Eixo Atlântico association, which promotes territorial cooperation and cultural integration between municipalities in Galicia and Northern Portugal, aims to use such initiatives to create economic and cultural hubs in the peninsula's north.
While the works are currently housed in the Antigos Paços do Concelho, they are slated for future transfer to the new Eixo Atlântico History Interpretation Centre. This new facility, located in a former female student residence on Av. Conde da Carreira, is expected to be completed before 2028, with an estimated investment between 700,000 and 1 million euros.
