Viana do Castelo prepares for Romaria d'Agonia festival

Luís Nobre, president of the Viana do Castelo municipal council, issued a message ahead of the Romaria d'Agonia, a week‑long celebration running from 15 to 23 August. He thanked the hundreds of volunteers, local organisations such as Viana Festas, the Confraria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia, police, fire services, civil protection, municipal departments, parish councils and folk groups for their work in organising the event. Nobre highlighted the festival’s authenticity, describing the sounds of drums, the preparation of streets, the display of gold‑embellished stalls and the participation of both residents and visitors in honour of Nossa Senhora da Agonia. He invited citizens and tourists to experience the traditional parades, the sea procession and other cultural programmes that define the “queen of pilgrimages” in Portugal.
