Viareggio driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run of cyclist

Authorities in Viareggio have arrested the driver of a van involved in a fatal hit-and-run that killed 46-year-old cyclist Linda Martinucci. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 11 near the Torre Matilde bridge.

Following an investigation by the Carabinieri, the owner of the vehicle was taken into custody and faces charges of road homicide and failure to render aid. He is currently being held in the Pistoia prison. A second man was charged with failure to render aid, while a third individual was cleared of involvement after investigators determined he was not on the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Martinucci was struck by the van while riding her bicycle. Despite rapid intervention from emergency services, she suffered cardiac arrest during transport to the hospital and passed away. Investigators are continuing to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the crash, including the vehicle's speed and path following the impact.
