Viareggio launches affordable solidarity housing for seniors
As life expectancy increases, society faces a growing number of elderly citizens living with chronic illnesses or reduced self-sufficiency. This demographic shift has created a pressing need for care services, ranging from home assistance to intermediate day centers, as social organizations struggle to adapt to these changing requirements.
In Viareggio, Italy, the Fondazione Pasquale ed Olga Pezzini has introduced a 'solidarity condominium' model to address the high costs of residential care. Designed for self-sufficient seniors who do not require continuous medical assistance, the project offers shared or private living spaces within a community setting.
Monthly costs for the program start at 315 euros per person in shared housing or 465 euros for single apartments. These fees cover utilities, condominium expenses, ordinary maintenance, and administrative management, though food and groceries remain the responsibility of the residents. This initiative aligns with local calls for more affordable housing solutions for the elderly.
