Viareggio opposition criticizes administration over tree removals

Political groups in Viareggio, specifically the Democratic Party and the Fermi Mai list, are criticizing the Grilli administration over its management of public greenery. The opposition alleges that the local government is prioritizing rapid tree removal over long-term care and prevention following recent severe weather events.

Concerns have been raised regarding specific sites, including via Maroncelli, where decades-old oleanders and a magnolia were slated for replacement due to construction-related instability. Critics also pointed to the via San Francesco underpass, where construction materials and concrete slabs were reportedly placed near pine trees, potentially damaging their roots.

The opposition claims that tree removals in areas such as via Puccini, via Leopardi, and via Gioberti occurred shortly after they requested access to municipal documents. They argue that while cutting trees is a quick fix, it fails to address the environmental necessity of maintaining mature trees for shade and ecological benefits.
