Vibe coding and engineering trends in AI-driven development

The emergence of ‘vibe coding’—a method where users describe software requirements in natural language for AI agents to implement—is presenting both significant productivity opportunities and technical risks for enterprises. This approach allows for rapid prototyping and the creation of custom tools without deep programming knowledge, shifting the developer's role from writing line-by-line code to verifying functional outcomes.

However, experts warn that while vibe coding is effective for exploration, it can create substantial issues when transitioning to production environments. Challenges include inconsistent code styles, security vulnerabilities, and the potential for ‘shadow AI’ if usage occurs without proper governance or data protection rules. To address these issues, the concept of ‘vibe engineering’ is being proposed to provide the necessary structure, security, and maintainability required for professional software deployment while retaining the speed of AI-driven development.
