Vibo Valentia hospital morgue closed due to hygiene issues

The hospital morgue in Vibo Valentia has been closed for over a month due to hygienic and structural deficiencies. The facility is currently unusable, and no renovation plans have been established to address the issues. This closure has complicated the management of remains and the performance of medico-legal examinations, forcing such procedures to be conducted in alternative locations.

The situation was highlighted by the case of Domenico Campana, whose body had to be transferred to Catanzaro for an autopsy following a maritime accident. Local authorities are considering the morgue in Tropea as a potential alternative, provided it meets the necessary requirements.

In a separate but related issue regarding local facilities, the municipality of Vibo Valentia has issued an urgent ordinance to mandate the burial of a man who had remained in a mortuary chamber for nine months. The prolonged presence of the remains caused malodorous emissions, posing a risk to public health and cemetery decorum. The delay was attributed to unresolved administrative procedures regarding payments to funeral services and the assignment of a burial niche.
