Vibration injuries cause lifelong damage in Swedish workplaces

A recent investigation by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) reveals a significant issue with vibration-related injuries in the workplace, particularly within the construction sector. The audit, which included over 4,000 inspections across 2,500 workplaces, found that 80 percent of the inspected sites failed to meet standards for preventing vibration-related harm.

These injuries, which include nerve damage, loss of sensation, and carpal tunnel syndrome, are causing lifelong disabilities. There is growing concern regarding young workers, such as carpenters, who are suffering severe, permanent damage early in their careers due to inadequate knowledge of tool safety and improper usage.

Experts suggest a significant number of cases go unreported. While approximately 500,000 Swedish workers are estimated to be exposed to hand-held machine vibrations for at least a quarter of their working time, only about 200 cases are approved annually by Afa Försäkring. This discrepancy points to a large dark figure of unreported injuries, potentially driven by a workplace culture where employees fear reporting ailments due to job security concerns.
