Vibrio bacteria pose heightened risk on Poland’s Baltic coast

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warned on 11 July that water temperature and salinity in the Baltic Sea are creating optimal conditions for Vibrio bacteria. Its latest forecast shows the highest risk today on Poland’s western shoreline near the German border, with elevated risk also in the Gulf of Gdańsk and Gulf of Puck. Monitoring by Poland’s Main Sanitary Inspectorate confirmed the presence of several Vibrio species, including V. vulnificus, V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus, along the coast.

Infections in Poland remain very rare; the most vulnerable are people with weakened immunity, the elderly and young children. Illness usually follows ingestion of contaminated water or seafood, while wounds can cause severe skin infections. Two fatal cases have been recorded in Germany this summer after exposure to Baltic waters. Polish health officials advise caution when swimming or handling seafood but say there is no cause for panic.
