Vice-Dean Joana Maria Socias of University of the Balearic Islands Dies
Joana Maria Socias Camacho, a distinguished professor of administrative law and vice‑dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), died on Thursday, 26 July 2026. The university announced her death, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
Socias, who earned her law degree in 1993 and a doctorate in 1998 from UIB, joined the university in 1996 as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 2000. She was appointed vice‑dean in 2013 and held the chair of administrative law from 2025. Her research focused on territorial planning, urbanism, sustainable tourism, environmental protection, housing, public services and regional law. Between 2007 and 2011 she served as director‑general of Relations with the Parliament and Coordinating Normative of the Balearic Government’s Presidency, also acting as secretary‑general of the department.
The rector, Jaume Carot, and the wider academic community highlighted her commitment to teaching, research and public service, describing her as a respected and beloved figure in the Balearic legal and academic circles.
