Gibran Rakabuming Raka visits North Sumatra to oversee disaster recovery

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka conducted a working visit to North Sumatra on September 4, 2026, to oversee post-disaster recovery efforts following the hydrometeorological disasters of late 2025.

In Tapanuli Selatan, the Vice President visited temporary housing in Napa Village, Batangtoru. He announced that the construction of 699 permanent housing units (huntap) on 18 hectares of land is scheduled to begin this month. Gibran apologized to residents from Garoga and Hutagodang villages for the continued reliance on temporary shelters and emphasized the government's responsibility to provide safe, dignified homes.

In Tapanuli Tengah, the Vice President inspected the GKPI Hutanabolon church, which was severely damaged by floods. He suggested the relocation of the church due to its location in a red zone and expressed government readiness to assist. He also urged the swift completion of the Sabodam infrastructure to mitigate future risks.

Additionally, Gibran reviewed the progress of the Garoga Bridge construction to ensure rapid regional recovery. To support these large-scale reconstruction efforts across Sumatra, the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force is coordinating with state-owned enterprises to stabilize the supply and price of essential materials like cement and steel.
