Vice President JD Vance downplays backlash to UFC fighter’s Michelle Obama slur at White House

A UFC match was staged on the White House lawn in June 2026. After winning his bout, fighter Josh Hokit shouted, “Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?” The remark was widely condemned as a sexist slur by members of both parties and by UFC CEO Dana White, who called it “nasty and false.”

Vice President JD Vance later appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and said the public reaction was “totally disproportionate.” He told Rogan that his communications team had prepared him for questions about the comment and that he was surprised “people lost their minds” over what he called a joke. Vance argued that provocative statements are commonplace in politics and that the backlash was overblown.
