Vicente López commemorates 11th anniversary of Armenian Jachkar monument
The municipality of Vicente López, Argentina, joined the Armenian community to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Jachkar monument. The ceremony took place at the intersection of Juan Carlos Cruz and Hipólito Yrigoyen, near the Paseo de la Costa.
Inaugurated on October 10, 2015, during the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the monument serves as a tribute to the 1.5 million victims. The Jachkar is a stone cross carved from duf, a traditional Armenian volcanic stone, by sculptor Artak Hampartsumian. It features the inscription “Memoria y Reclamo” (Memory and Claim).
Mayor Soledad Martínez participated in the event alongside diplomatic authorities, Armenian institutional representatives, and local residents. Martínez expressed pride in the monument, stating it should remain a symbol of Armenian presence and identity in Argentina. The Jachkar tradition is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
