Vicente Quirarte, prominent Mexican writer and academic, dies at 72
Vicente Quirarte Castañeda, a prominent Mexican poet, essayist, playwright, and researcher, died in Mexico City on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the age of 72. His passing was confirmed by El Colegio Nacional, an institution he had been a member of since 2016.
Quirarte was a highly influential figure in contemporary Mexican and Ibero-American literature. His academic roots were deeply tied to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he completed his undergraduate, master's, and doctoral studies. His literary career gained early recognition in 1979 with the publication of 'Teatro sobre el viento amado', which received the Punto de Partida prize from UNAM.
Throughout his career, Quirarte received numerous prestigious honors, including the Francisco González León National Young Poetry Prize in 1982, the José Revueltas National Literary Essay Prize in 1990, and the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 1991. In 2024, he was honored with the National Prize for Arts and Literature in the field of Linguistics and Literature. He was also a member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua.
