Vicente Quirarte, prominent Mexican writer and academic, dies at 72

Mexican writer, poet, and academic Vicente Quirarte has passed away at the age of 72 in Mexico City. A prominent figure in contemporary Mexican literature, Quirarte was recognized for his extensive work as an essayist, narrator, dramatist, and researcher.

Quirarte maintained a lifelong connection with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he studied, taught, and held significant leadership roles, including the direction of the Institute of Bibliographic Research. He was also a member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua since 2002.

His literary body of work, spanning over four decades, frequently explored themes of Mexico City, urban memory, and cultural history. Notable works include ‘Teatro sobre el viento armado’, ‘Calle nuestra’, and ‘Elogio de la calle’. His passing has drawn condolences from major institutions including UNAM, El Colegio Nacional, and the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua.
