Vichada region highlights cashew cultivation and cultural diversity
The Colombian department of Vichada is emerging as a significant hub for cashew cultivation, which is being considered by the Ministry of Agriculture as a potential substitute for rice crops. The cashew tree, scientifically known as Anacardium occidentale, is a perennial species that offers diverse economic uses through its nut and its fleshy pedicel, often called the cashew apple.
Beyond agriculture, the region of Vichada and Guainía is the focus of a new documentary series by Canal Trece titled ‘ORIENTE: Donde termina el país conocido’. The series aims to explore the social, cultural, and environmental dynamics of eastern Colombia by highlighting the lived experiences and stories of the local communities inhabiting these territories.
