Victor Boniface leaves Bayer Leverkusen bench early during Mainz match

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface left the bench early during a 4-3 Bundesliga victory against Mainz after failing to be substituted into the match. The 25-year-old Nigerian forward reportedly headed toward the dressing room in the 83rd minute once it became clear he would not enter the game.

Head coach Carles Martínez stated he did not notice the player leaving during the match but indicated that a conversation would take place if the reports were accurate. Martínez defended his substitution decisions, noting that players' desire to help the team is understandable, but such decisions are a standard part of football.

Sporting Managing Director Simon Rolfes addressed the incident, suggesting the player might have simply gone to the dressing room too early and stated, “It won’t happen next time.” Rolfes defended Boniface’s general conduct and recent development, noting the striker has improved his fitness following previous knee issues. Boniface has struggled for regular playing time this season, making only one Bundesliga appearance.
