Victor Hedman discusses mental health leave and return to Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Victor Hedman has opened up about his decision to step away from the team in mid-March last season. The 35-year-old defenseman revealed that his absence was due to mental health challenges, specifically intense performance pressure that he described as a feeling of paralysis on game days.

Hedman stated that taking time away was a necessary decision for both his mental and physical well-being, noting that he felt he could not effectively help the team while not being himself on the ice. After a summer of recovery, Hedman confirmed he is now physically and mentally ready to return for training camp.

Last season, Hedman was limited to 33 games due to a combination of injuries and his leave of absence. To support the defense this upcoming season, the Lightning have acquired veteran defenseman John Carlson, who signed a two-year deal during free agency.
