Victor Lafay sidelined by unexplained illness

French professional cyclist Victor Lafay has revealed that an undiagnosed illness has caused him to miss the entire 2026 racing season. Speaking through his team, Unibet Rose Rockets, the 30-year-old described experiencing intense and incessant fatigue that began after returning to France from a trip to China in February.

Lafay noted that while he felt healthy during his time in China, his condition deteriorated upon his return. Despite undergoing extensive medical examinations—including blood tests, heart and lung scans, and searches for various viruses—doctors have yet to identify the cause of his condition. He has previously attempted to treat the symptoms with antibiotics, suspecting a gastric bacterium, but saw no improvement.

Team leader Bas Tietema described Lafay as a unique individual who had joined the team with high ambitions. Due to the ongoing health struggle, Lafay will not participate in any further races this year.
