Victor Miller, ‘Friday the 13th’ screenwriter, dies at 86
Victor Miller, the screenwriter responsible for the 1980 horror classic ‘Friday the 13th’, has died at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by his son, Ian, who noted that Miller passed away on Monday in Alameda, California.
Miller’s screenplay helped define the slasher genre by introducing the summer camp setting and the character of Pamela Voorhees, the mother seeking vengeance for her son, Jason. While the franchise later evolved to focus on Jason Voorhees as the primary antagonist, Miller’s original work established the foundational mythology of Camp Crystal Lake.
Beyond his contributions to horror cinema, Miller had a prolific career in daytime television. He served as a writer for several long-running soap operas, including ‘All My Children’, ‘One Life to Live’, ‘Another World’, ‘Guiding Light’, and ‘General Hospital’. His work on ‘All My Children’ earned him three Daytime Emmy Awards.
In recent years, Miller was involved in a legal battle regarding the copyright of his original screenplay, which he successfully won in 2021. His legacy is expected to continue through the upcoming prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’, which is set to explore the backstory of the Voorhees family.
