Victor Osimhen appointed Galatasaray captain as Mauro Icardi departs
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is set to take over the captaincy at Turkish giants Galatasaray following the exit of Argentine forward Mauro Icardi. The club confirmed Icardi’s contract has ended, freeing the captain’s armband and the iconic number 9 shirt, which Osimhen will inherit. Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray from Napoli in 2025, has been pivotal in two consecutive Süper Lig titles, a Turkish Cup win and notable Champions League performances, including a hat‑trick against Ajax and becoming the fastest player to reach 50 goals for the club.
Galatasaray has also indicated it will not entertain offers for Osimhen, instead rewarding him with increased status and leadership responsibilities. The move makes him one of the few Nigerian players to captain a major European team and could influence any future transfer speculation.
