Victor Wembanyama set to rejoin France for August 2027 World Cup qualifiers

Victor Wembanyama, the 2.24 m French NBA star, will return to the senior national basketball team after a two‑year absence. The French Basketball Federation announced his inclusion in the 15‑man roster for the August 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifying window.

France will host Slovenia on 27 August in Paris and travel to Stockholm to face Sweden on 30 August. Two preparatory friendlies against Serbia are scheduled for 20 August in Belgrade and 23 August in Orléans. Coach Frédéric Fauthoux stressed that Wembanyama is the "undisputed leader of this generation" and that his presence is essential to create on‑court chemistry.

Wembanyama missed EuroBasket 2025 because a right‑shoulder venous thrombosis ended his season early. His return follows a successful NBA campaign with the San Antonio Spurs, where he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and helped the team reach the 2026 Finals. The selection also restores Evan Fournier and retains veterans such as Rudy Gobert.
