Victoria announces $352 million plan to address pothole crisis

Victoria is facing a significant pothole crisis that has become a central political issue ahead of the November state election. The Victorian government has announced a $352 million investment to double its repair target to 500,000 potholes by January 2027. To assist with maintenance, Premier Ben Carroll proposed using low-security inmates for basic roadside tasks such as mowing grass, removing graffiti, and collecting rubbish.

Experts from the National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) have cautioned that while basic maintenance is necessary, actual road repairs require specialized skills that the prison population may not possess. The Coalition has countered with a $5 billion plan aimed at repairing one million potholes over four years.

Data from the Snap Send Solve app indicates a sharp rise in reported issues, with a 46.4% year-on-year increase in complaints in Victoria. While heavy vehicle traffic and climate change contribute to road deterioration, the lack of consistent national road-condition data makes precise comparisons between states difficult.
