Victoria Barracks sale sparks large protest in Sydney

More than 2,000 people gathered at Kippax Lake in Sydney on Sunday to protest the federal government's proposed sale of Victoria Barracks in Paddington. The demonstration, organized by the Save Victoria Barracks group, aimed to pressure Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to halt the sale of the historic military site.

High-profile figures including former prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott addressed the crowd. Howard described the barracks as a “precious, irreplaceable, not-for-sale national asset,” while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor framed the protest as a matter of both heritage protection and national security.

Critics of the sale argue that the facility, which has been in continuous military use since 1848, remains strategically vital due to its proximity to the CBD and its role in defense and emergency response. Former head of army Ken Gillespie also spoke at the rally, asserting that the site is a working base of national significance and should not be treated as “surplus real estate.”
