Victoria launches first offshore wind auction for 2GW capacity

The Victorian Government has launched its first offshore wind auction, entering the Request for Proposal stage to secure 2 gigawatts of new capacity in the Gippsland region. The initiative aims to bolster the state’s energy supply as aging coal-fired power stations, such as the Yallourn Power Station and Loy Yang A, approach retirement.

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) described the auction as a pivotal moment for regional workers and local businesses, noting that offshore wind can provide reliable, local power while reducing exposure to volatile global energy markets. This transition is critical as the Australian Energy Market Operator has identified potential reliability gaps in Victoria starting as early as 2030-31.

Environment Victoria supported the move, highlighting that offshore wind can leverage the strong winds of the Bass Strait to provide affordable, home-grown clean energy. The organization emphasized the importance of integrating these developments with environmental protections, specifically calling for the implementation of the Western Port Framework to manage marine spatial planning and protect local ecosystems during the transition.
