Victoria mayoral race intensifies with nine contenders

Political competition is intensifying in Victoria as at least nine individuals vie for the mayoral position following the departure of Eduardo ‘Lalito’ Gattás. The race features significant internal maneuvering within the Morena party and competition from opposition groups.

Within Morena, several figures are positioning themselves for the role, including Gerardo Illoldi, currently the Secretary of Labor; Rómulo Pérez, the State Council President of Morena; and Katalyna Méndez, a local deputy. Other Morena contenders include Hugo Reséndez, Lorena Zapata, and federal deputy José ‘Pepe’ Braña, who has explicitly stated his intent to seek the mayoralty. Much of the internal competition is viewed as a struggle for control of the capital by different political factions.

Opposition candidates include Horacio ‘Lacho’ Reyna representing the PRI, and Juan José ‘Juanjo’ Salazar representing Movimiento Ciudadano. Additionally, Jorge ‘Tico’ García is reportedly in discussions with various political parties.
