Victoria motorcyclists plan protest over deadly pothole crisis
Motorcyclists in Victoria are planning a protest at parliament to address a growing crisis regarding the state’s road conditions. The movement follows the death of 71-year-old rider Peter ‘Tiki’ Mason, who died after hitting a pothole near Trawalla on September 13.
According to the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office, nearly half of the roads in Victoria are in poor or very poor condition. Advocates, including Rob Salvatore, chair of the Victorian Motorcycle Council, suggest the issue stems from inadequate resources, funding, and the standards applied to road repairs. Riders have noted that while potholes may only cause minor damage to cars, they frequently lead to hospitalizations and serious injury for motorcyclists.
