Victoria offers improved pay deal to teachers to avoid third strike

The Victorian state government has issued a revised pay and conditions offer to public school teachers and education support staff in an attempt to prevent a third statewide strike scheduled for August 19.

Building on a previous proposal that was narrowly rejected by union members in July, the new offer includes a 28.3% salary increase over the next four years. Additionally, the deal features a $2,000 lump-sum payment for staff who sign the agreement, along with annual 1% lump-sum payments for employees at the top of their pay classification ranges. The package also includes concessions regarding face-to-face teaching hours and meeting commitments.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is currently considering the offer. While the union had previously sought a 35% increase over three years, the outcome of these negotiations remains uncertain as the council meets to decide on next steps, which may include a ballot of the union's membership.
