Victoria Police launch new tool to combat vehicle theft

Victoria Police has launched a new online tool designed to assist the public in identifying and reporting stolen vehicles. The digital platform allows users to enter a vehicle's registration, make, and model to check if it is listed as stolen in databases such as the Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP), VicRoads, and the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS).

Authorities noted that thieves are increasingly using technology, such as key-mimicking and cloning devices, to target vehicles with push-start ignitions. Police reported that on-board diagnostic devices are being used more frequently during intercepts of suspicious vehicles. To combat these tech-savvy methods, police recommend installing affordable on-board diagnostic port locks, using steering wheel locks, and storing car keys in signal-blocking pouches or metal containers to prevent signal hijacking.

Crime data indicates that a significant number of thefts occur on residential streets, with approximately one-third of stolen cars in Victoria taken from the street—double the number taken from residential properties. Police have successfully recovered about 80 per cent of stolen vehicles over the past year.
