Victoria Premier Ben Carroll launches election campaign

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has officially commenced his re-election campaign ahead of the November 28 state election. Facing challenging opinion polls, Carroll launched a five-week campaign tour, beginning with a visit to Geelong University Hospital.

As part of his platform, Carroll announced a $1.5 billion funding package over four years aimed at reducing emergency department wait times. The initiative intends to fund 1,500 additional health workers, including 750 nurses, and provide 250 more beds across 12 hospitals, including the Alfred, Austin, and Royal Children’s hospitals. The government claims this will expand emergency capacity by 25 percent and treat an additional 210,000 patients annually.

Recent polling indicates a difficult path for the Labor Party, with a 10 percent negative swing in two-party preferred support compared to 2022. The Liberal-National Coalition, led by Jess Wilson, currently holds a lead in preference polls. Additionally, One Nation has emerged as a significant factor in the upcoming vote.
