Principals in Victoria have rejected a revised pay deal that would halve teachers' meeting hours from 80 to 40 per year. The offer, which also included a 28.3% pay rise over four years and a 12.75% increase by October, was narrowly turned down by the Australian Education Union. Thousands of teachers had already struck last week, and about 20,000 teachers, principals and educators marched in Melbourne demanding better conditions.

The Australian Principals Federation warned that cutting meeting hours could have unintended consequences for school leaders and operations. Federation president Andrew Cock said the federation was not consulted before the proposal was announced. Premier Ben Carroll said the government is close to reaching a deal and has pulled “every lever” in negotiations.
