Victoria to review and rewrite sentencing laws

The Victorian Labor Government has announced a major review and rewrite of the state’s sentencing laws. Justice Karin Emerton, the former President of the Court of Appeal, has been appointed Chairperson of the Sentencing Advisory Council to lead this independent review. This marks the first comprehensive review of the Sentencing Act since its implementation in 1992.

The review aims to ensure sentencing remains consistent with community expectations and better supports victims. Following the consultation process with experts and the public, the government intends to rewrite the Act to meet the needs of modern Victoria.
