Victoria Villarruel criticizes freeze on Malvinas sovereignty law
Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel has expressed sharp disagreement with the government's decision to stall the National Sovereignty Defense bill, commonly known as the 'Malvinas Law.' The project, which was reportedly promoted by presidential advisor Santiago Caputo, has been frozen in the Chamber of Deputies.
The decision to halt the legislation follows reported pressure from the United States. Specifically, concerns were raised by U.S. Department of State officials regarding the law's potential to impose economic sanctions on American companies with subsidiaries operating in the islands.
Villarruel responded to social media criticism regarding the government's stance by stating, “the truly patriotic and Malvinas-supporting ones remained silent,” adding the phrase “Res non verba” (deeds, not words). Her comments signal a growing internal rift within the La Libertad Avanza coalition regarding the administration's legislative strategy and its response to diplomatic pressure from Washington.
