Victoria wildlife authorities warn of increased snake activity
As spring temperatures rise in Victoria, Australia, local authorities are warning residents of increased snake activity. There are 27 snake species present across the state, and they are becoming more active due to the warming weather.
Tony English, manager of Wildlife Emergencies and Welfare Services at the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, noted that snake bites typically occur when individuals attempt to capture or kill the animals. He advised the public to maintain distance, keep yards tidy by clearing clutter like timber and rocks, and supervise pets closely.
Under the Wildlife Act 1975, it is illegal to capture, harm, or kill snakes in Victoria, as all species are protected. In the event of a snake bite, residents are urged to call 000 immediately.
