Victorian Greens propose state-owned supermarkets to combat cost-of-living

The Victorian Greens are targeting Labor heartlands ahead of the November state election, capitalizing on voter frustration regarding housing, cost-of-living, and climate action. Leader Ellen Sandell stated that the party aims to replace Labor rather than merely improve them, citing disillusionment with the current government after 12 years in power.

As part of their platform, the Greens have proposed a $350 million trial to establish 10 state-owned supermarkets. Inspired by initiatives in New York City, the plan seeks to challenge the market dominance of Coles and Woolworths by offering essential grocery items at approximately 70 per cent of the cost of major chains. The party suggests this could save the average Victorian household $4,274 annually. The trial would be funded through taxes on big banks and gambling.

While the Greens propose this model to increase affordability, some economists suggest that strengthening competition laws and improving supply chain efficiency may be more effective methods for lowering prices.
