Victorian Greyhound Awards honor Paul Wheeler and Harley Whelan

The Victorian Greyhound Awards recognized significant figures within the Australian greyhound racing industry. The late Paul Wheeler was inducted into the Victorian Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame, honoring his legacy as a highly successful breeder and owner. Wheeler, who passed away in 2021, was noted for his influence on the breed and the sport through champions such as Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One. His breeding operation was famously highlighted in 2011 when he bred and owned the first seven greyhounds to cross the line in the Melbourne Cup.

Additionally, trainer Harley Whelan received the Ned Bryant Silver Fox Award. Whelan has transitioned from a hobbyist to managing a successful breeding, rearing, and racing operation under the Lakeview prefix. His kennel achieved notable success over the past 12 months, producing 97 winners from 384 starts and maintaining a 25 per cent winning strike rate. The Whelan family has also invested in a state-of-the-art kennel facility in Sale.
