Victorian Labor Government Faces Royal Commission Over CFMEU Scandal
The Victorian Labor government, which delivered the EastLink tollway in 2008 and removed 29 level railway crossings between 2014 and 2018 on budget and schedule, is now engulfed in a major scandal. Former transport minister Jacinta Allan, long considered the state’s least‑popular politician, was dismissed from her position in early June. Her successor, Ben Carroll, announced a royal commission to investigate alleged wrongdoing by the Construction, Forestry, Maritime and Energy Union (CFMEU) that may have cost the state billions of dollars.
The inquiry focuses on the influx of former Queensland union members in 2014, led by long‑time CFMEU chief John Setka, and the activities of organiser Joe Myles, who had previously delayed a $350 million Brisbane project in 2010 and accrued more than 20 court convictions for coercion, obstruction and safety breaches. A scathing anti‑corruption report by Geoffrey Watson and a Queensland commission of inquiry have added further detail to the investigation, which will run alongside Labor’s November election campaign.
