Victorian local governments seek increased funding for community needs
Local government bodies in Victoria are advocating for increased financial support to address diverse community pressures. The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) has called for investment to help 79 councils manage climate impacts, rising costs, and infrastructure needs for housing delivery.
In Murrindindi Shire, the council has welcomed $920,000 in state and federal funding to support bushfire recovery programs through June 2028. However, Mayor Damien Gallagher noted that the grant does not fully address the scale of the disaster, stating that the shire accounted for roughly 48% of Victoria’s structural losses from the January bushfires.
Separately, Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece has urged the federal government to assist cash-strapped councils with security costs for religious events. This request follows a synagogue firebombing and comes as part of testimony regarding the Royal Commission into anti-Semitism and Social Cohesion.
