Victoria's state election sparks new party registrations and hospitality policy debate

The Victorian state election scheduled for November brings scrutiny to hospitality sector policies. The incumbent Labor government has introduced reforms such as simplified liquor licensing, permanent outdoor dining, streamlined approvals for new venues, live‑music grants and payroll tax relief, yet pubs face rising operating costs and softer consumer spending. The Liberal‑National coalition has not released a detailed arts or hospitality plan, focusing instead on governance issues. The Greens are calling for increased public investment in live music and arts, while the Victorian Socialists propose treating pubs as community “third places”, offering tax incentives, state‑ownership options and direct financial support to diversify revenue away from alcohol and gaming.

On 7 August the Victorian Electoral Commission officially registered the West Party, a grassroots alternative to Labor and the Liberals in Melbourne’s west. Founder Paul Hopper, a local business magnate, and former upper‑house MP Andrew Elsbury are among the candidates contesting lower‑house seats such as Tarneit and Niddrie. The party’s platform emphasizes transport upgrades—including the Better Buses for Melbourne’s West plan, rail electrification, new stations and road improvements—alongside expanded hospital services, mental‑health support and job creation in the western suburbs.
