Video game developers discuss mechanics born from bugs and technical challenges
Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that several iconic mechanics in the Super Mario franchise originated from programming errors. Specifically, the ability for Mario to run across small gaps without falling was originally a bug caused by a collision detection error. Miyamoto decided to keep the mechanic, stating, "It's fun that he can cross those gaps running, let's leave it just as it is!" Additionally, the appearance of hidden blocks was a result of a bug that caused coins to appear spontaneously in mid-air.
Separately, Owlcat Games discussed the difficulties encountered during the development of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader for the Nintendo Switch 2. Publishing head Andrey Tsvetkov admitted the studio made the mistake of taking shortcuts, believing they could resolve performance issues with minor adjustments. The project eventually faced significant performance challenges and bugs, leading the studio to conclude that a successful port requires deep code reorganization rather than simple fixes.
