Video game industry faces technological shifts and AI integration

The video game industry is undergoing significant technological and structural shifts. Modern gaming consoles have evolved into sophisticated entertainment hubs, utilizing advanced processors and graphics units to provide immersive visual experiences. Hardware developments now include enhanced controllers with touchpads, motion sensors, and integrated speakers, while the market offers a range of options from budget-friendly models to limited collector editions.

Simultaneously, the industry faces economic challenges, including rising development costs and long production cycles. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence offers potential solutions for speeding up testing, programming, and localization, as well as reducing the costs of AAA development. However, there is significant concern regarding job security. While AI can increase efficiency, it also threatens roles previously held by writers, artists, programmers, and QA testers.

According to the AGDC 2026 State of the Game Industry survey, 28 percent of industry professionals reported being directly affected by layoffs in the previous two years, a figure that rises to 33 percent in the United States. The survey noted that 17 percent of respondents lost their jobs in the last twelve months, with 48 percent of those laid off still seeking new employment.
