Video game preservation requires manuals and hardware context

Preserving classic video games requires more than just saving executable files. To maintain the integrity of a game as a complete work, archivists emphasize the importance of keeping original manuals, packaging, and hardware information.

Modern digital purchases often lack the context provided by older physical releases, which included setup instructions and platform-specific details. These materials allow future researchers to understand the original user experience. Current archiving guidelines, such as those from the Library of Congress, suggest treating games as complex digital objects that include operating systems, controllers, power supplies, and metadata to ensure the original environment can be accurately reconstructed.
