Video game risks: Experts and authorities warn of microtransactions and fraud
Experts and authorities are warning about the risks associated with free video games, focusing on both predatory monetization and digital fraud targeting minors.
In Spain, Adrián Suárez, a professor at the International University of La Rioja, warns that many free-to-play titles use mechanics similar to slot machines. These games utilize variable rewards and microtransactions, such as loot boxes and seasonal passes, to encourage impulsive spending. The use of virtual currencies can further obscure the actual cost of items from young players.
In Mexico, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the National Guard have issued alerts regarding fraudulent promotions. Cybercriminals are using messages that promise free memberships, such as Roblox Premium, to lure users to malicious websites. These scams aim to steal personal information or install malware on devices. Authorities recommend downloading content only from official stores and consulting adults before installing new applications.
