Video games linked to reduced loneliness and improved mental health
Recent scientific research highlights the growing role of digital media and video games in supporting mental health and cognitive vitality, particularly among older adults.
A cross-sectional study published in July 2026 in the journal JMIR Serious Games, involving 2,252 adults, demonstrated that video games can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness. Specifically, players of open-world adventure games reported a loneliness index of 3.02, compared to 4.28 among non-players. This reduction is considered health-significant, as chronic loneliness is linked to a 26 percent increase in the risk of premature death.
Additionally, technological integration is expanding mental health tools. Companies like Apple are incorporating mindfulness features into operating systems, allowing users to track meditation and exercise via the Apple Watch and Health app to monitor mental well-being alongside physical data.
