Video games may support mental health treatment, research suggests

Research published in the journal JMIR Serious Games suggests that commercial video games can serve as supportive tools for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. The findings indicate that interactive media may help bridge treatment gaps for individuals facing barriers to traditional mental health care, such as high costs or geographic isolation.

Specific titles like Minecraft and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been noted for fostering social connections and mitigating feelings of isolation by building communities around shared interests. Additionally, studies have linked certain games to improved mood regulation; for example, adolescents playing Mario Kart demonstrated enhanced emotional regulation skills compared to non-players.

While clinical specialists note that video games can act as effective therapeutic distractions to interrupt repetitive negative thoughts, they emphasize that these games are supplementary tools and cannot replace licensed mental health professionals or traditional therapeutic interventions.
