Vidhu Vinod Chopra: The journey of a filmmaker from Kashmir to Indian cinema

Indian filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, known for films such as ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’, and ‘12th Fail’, celebrated his birthday on September 5. His journey to cinematic success involved significant financial and personal struggles.

Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, Chopra faced initial opposition from his father regarding his career choice. Due to financial constraints, he was unable to afford film school initially. He overcame this by topping his Economics honors program at Kashmir University, which earned him a national scholarship to attend the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.

His early work included the National Award-winning short film ‘Murder at Monkey Hill’ and the documentary ‘An Encounter with Faces’, which received an Oscar nomination in 1979. His directorial career gained major recognition with the 1989 film ‘Parinda’.
