Allgäu region prepares for 2026 traditional cattle drives

Various traditional cattle drives, known as Viehscheid or Almabtrieb, are scheduled across the Allgäu region and surrounding areas for the 2026 season.

In Obermaiselstein, one of the largest events, over 1,300 animals are expected to return from eleven alpine pastures on September 19, 2026. Pfronten will host a major event on September 12, 2026, featuring approximately 1,000 animals and a large festival program. Other scheduled events include the Bolsterlang drive on September 22, 2026, and the Apfeltrang drive on October 4, 2026.

The season concludes with the Älplerletze at Füssener Jöchle in the Tannheimer Tal on September 27, 2026, a cross-border tradition involving a mountain mass and a final communal meal for herdsmen. Additionally, the village of Rattendorf in Austria continues its tradition of celebrating the successful return of healthy livestock from the alpine pastures.
