Vienna and Berlin implement major public transit upgrades

Public transportation networks in Vienna and Berlin are undergoing significant upgrades. In Vienna, tram line 18 is being extended starting September 5. The new route will run from Schlachthausgasse through Stadionallee and Meiereistraße to the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, eventually turning at Handelskai. This extension aims to connect various U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines and provide better access to the stadium during major events. As part of the change, Meiereistraße and Stadionallee will be closed to through-traffic for cars to improve tram reliability and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

In Berlin, the BVG is introducing new Series J subway cars to the U9 line starting in late September. These modern trains, which feature more spacious interiors, improved lighting, and advanced digital passenger information systems, are part of a broader effort to modernize the aging fleet and increase service reliability. The rollout follows the successful introduction of similar trains on the U5 line.
