Vienna and Brussels face rising urban challenges in crime and pest control

Urban centers in Vienna and Brussels are facing localized challenges regarding public order and sanitation.

In Vienna, the Vorgartenmarkt market in Leopoldstadt has become a frequent target for burglaries. Local business owners report a rise in brazen thefts, often involving minors under the age of 14. One restaurateur reported being targeted three times since the start of the year, with recent incidents involving smashed storefronts and the theft of cash and electronics. Police have cited staffing shortages and the area's lack of surveillance after business hours as contributing factors to the crime spike. The FPÖ political party has called for an increased police presence in the district.

In Brussels, the historic city center is struggling with a significant rat infestation. Residents and business owners have expressed concern after footage surfaced of a rodent inside a chocolate shop window at the Grand-Place. Since February, city authorities have captured 1,073 rats through various operations and installed smart traps in pedestrian zones. While the city has increased the pest control budget from 35,000 to 100,000 euros and formed a dedicated task force, opposition politicians argue that current measures remain insufficient to protect the city's tourism and local commerce.
